Oldboy - Chan-wook Park - 2003 - Korea

Oldboy is one of those films where immediately after you watch it you know it will be a film you will never forget. It is also a film that you will need time to decompress after you watch it.

The plot follows a man who is imprisoned in a hotel like room for fifteen years, he escapes and then seeks vengeance on whoever was responsible while trying to find the reason behind what had happened.

This film is rich with slick visuals, intense violence and complex characters in a way that makes you really appreciate what Park was able to to as an auteur and helped inspire some of Hollywood's biggest directors including Tarantino and Spike Lee (who is remaking the film).

Oldboy is a modern day violent masterpiece which is smarter and more heartfelt that most other films in the revenge genre.
