Leon: The Professional - Luc Besson - 1994

Leon: The Professional is a fun violent film with a lot of action and a lot of heart. The story follows Leon (Jean Reno) a professional assassin who takes in his 12 year old neighbor Mathilda (Natalie Portman) after her parents are killed by a ruthless dirty cop (Gary Oldman). The two start to bond as Leon starts teaching Mathilda his trade.

Leon: The Professional is a rare action film in that if you were to delete all of the action in it there would still be a solid tangible film with rich likable characters who develop over the film. In a way the film is more about a lonely middle aged man who begins to care about someone else for the first time in his life. The two characters learn from each-other and become the closest and unlikeliest of friends.

With that being said there is still a lot of action and a seriously bad villain to tackle. Gary Oldman gave a wonderful performance (like always) as a dangerous opera loving thug who will murder your whole family before stabbing you in the back.

Leon: The Professional is a fun film filled with emotion and explosions.
