Children Of Men - Alfonso Cuaron - 2006

2006 was one of my favorite move years and many films from that year will be discussed on this blog. With that being said, Children Of Men was the best film to come out that year. And is one of the best films of the decade if not the best film of the decade. (Rolling Stone ranked it 2nd)

The film takes place in the not so distant future where humans no longer have the genetic ability to procreate. The plot follows Theo (Clive Owen) a man who reluctantly agrees to secretly transport a woman who is miraculously pregnant. A task that is made very difficult by widespread panic, poverty, and violence.

Watching Children Of Men made me feel more tense than any other film I had seen before. This level of suspense (and stress in my case) comes from Cuaron's use of long handheld camera shots that literally put you in the action rather that just showing you. There are several of these long takes spread throughout the film, the most impressive of which is a long take inside a small car where the camera is constantly moving and spinning.

Children Of Men is a film that should be seen by all. It is a beautifully executed nail biter that will stand the test of time. I cannot recommend this film enough.
